Phrases to introduce your first argument:

  1. For the Task A, the requirement is that an ARGUMENTATIVE and/or PERSUASIVE essay be written.

  2. There is also the requirement that the essay be a response to the main idea in the comments.

  3. For an essay to comply with these requirements, it is necessary for the student to first figure out what the main idea is in all the comments. This means that you think and analyse ALL of the comments together and try to harmonize ALL the comments so that you can see what the central theme is.

  4. Once you have figured out what the main idea is in the comments, then you can phrase the main idea as a proposition, such as: Wealth is desirable but it is not a panacea to all that ills us in this world; some may say that wealth is often a burden to bear.

  5. Once you have summed up the main idea, you then have to say whether you agree or disagree with that main idea.

  6. You then have to state two or three reasons why you agree or disagree.

  7. You must discuss one reason/argument per paragraph and give examples. For instance, in the wealth is desirable part, you can cite the many things that wealth can give: a good education at the best schools (Eton, for example). For the part that wealth is not a panacea to all that ills us in the world, you can cite examples of rich people whose wealth do not help them get over depression (Robin Williams, for instance). For the part that wealth is often a burden, you can cite an example of people whose wealth feed upon their baser instincts (Lindsay Lohan is rich and famous, and yet, her private life is marred by drunkenness and lawlessness, or Michael Jackson who was hounded by allegations of ***** abuse of children).

  8. When you have discussed those, you must tie up all the ideas you discussed in a concluding paragraph.

  9. The Task A is a test of reasoning that measures the student's capacity for logic and verbal reasoning as evidenced by their ability: to grasp a central theme from a set of comments; phrase it as a proposition or debatable issue; form an opinion; discuss the strongest and most salient arguments to support the stand they have made on the issue; and to cite examples to illustrate and illumine their arguments.

Thesis: the first paragraph should provide an explanation or an interpretation of the quotation or quotations that you have chosen- define quote. Agree with the quote and say why, create an opening dialogue. Thesis statement right usually positioned at the last sentence of paragraph 1.

It is pivotal to the entire essay. It is the one sentence that defines exactly what you are going to say in your essay. Most markers will use this as a basis to judge your essay as to whether the content matches what you promised in your thesis statement. The thesis statement should be clear, concise and should sum up your view in relation to the theme of the comments. It should be your words only and not include part of a comment.

Antithesis: the second paragraph (and sometimes a 3rd and / or 4th) provides an example, real or hypothetical, that demonstrates a point of view opposite to the one presented in the Thesis.
